Are you bored with your plain, builder-grade, cookie-cutter kitchen? Does it need an injection of color, personality or simply brought into this century? Are you embarrassed to host your guests there? If you’re nodding your head as you read, you’re in luck!

Many people find themselves stuck in a home decor rut. They aren’t happy with how a room looks yet they don’t know where to start and think it will cost too much anyway. Redecorating certainly can get expensive but it doesn’t have to! Read on for super low-cost tips and ideas for breathing life back into your kitchen and turning it into your favorite room in the house.

1. Paint

Painting a room is the fastest and most cost-effective way to transform any room. The right color can make your kitchen feel bigger, or more intimate, or more modern- it all depends on what look you’re going for. And the best part is, there are ways to get plenty of paint for next to nothing.

Walmart offers a wide selection of paint for less than most hardware stores, so that’s one option. You can also find paint on sale, often because a customer returned the unused portion of their paint or because it was mis-tinted (sometimes these colors are just not good, but occasionally you can find one you really like).

Remember to keep track of how much your paint costs. Also, if you are planning to paint the cabinets, you will need primer. This will cost around $20-25 for a gallon, and you want water-based, not oil.

You can also use spray paint to upgrade existing cabinet hardware or to make cheap hardware look high-end. Spray paint is only a few dollars per can which makes it a perfect, budget-friendly alternative to buying pricey new hardware for your cabinets.

2. Update Your Backsplash

Whether you have no backsplash at all or your backsplash is tile, stone, glass, or any other material, there’s something you can do to spruce it up.

Once again, paint is a great choice for freshening up most types of backsplashes. You can also cover over your existing backsplash with craft-grade materials such as heavy-duty foils, metal leaf, or even fabric if you seal it well. The goal is to find a material you love that costs far less than typical backsplash material.

3. Utilize Contact Paper

Did you know you can get a roll of pretty contact paper for under $20? It can be applied to any smooth surface including glass, appliances, countertops, and the back of cabinets or even just the shelves. It can be used to line the inside of drawers or on the outer sides of a drawer.

A product similar to contact paper is window film. This is usually transparent enough to let light through but obscures the glass to hide anything on the other side. There are many pretty types; some gives glass a frosted look, others create a prism effect. This is a creative option for glass-front cabinets or as a border around windows.

With a little creativity and time, you can take your kitchen from “blah” to beautiful, without going into debt to do it.
